Near the Milies railway station has been erected a monument in memory of the local residents executed by German troops on Monday, October 4, 1943. The existence of such a monument, like the many others that exist throughout Greece, constitutes a kind of “official” recognition of the victims who fell during the years of the brutal occupation. Alongside this “official” tribute, however, there is also a more personal way of remembering. The names permanently engraved on marble and stone refer to people who were relatives, close friends, or even people with whom one had daily contact or simply shared companionship. Here, the “hard” and “inflexible” material is contrasted with a more ephemeral, malleable, and soft one: the candle. Used candles from nearby churches—sometimes dedicated to the memory of beloved people who have passed away, or as reminders of all kinds of wishes—are spread out on the ground, like a “shadow” of the marble column, falling at the moment of execution.
Πλησίον του σιδηροδρομικού σταθμού των Μηλέων ανεγέρθηκε μνημείο των ντόπιων εκτελεσθέντων από τα γερμανικά στρατεύματα τη Δευτέρα 4 Οκτωβρίου 1943. Η ύπαρξη ενός μνημείου τέτοιου, όπως και των αντίστοιχων που υπάρχουν σε όλη την Ελλάδα, συνιστά κάποιου είδους «επίσημη» αναγνώριση των θυμάτων της θηριωδίας των κατοχικών χρόνων. Πλάι στην «επίσημη», όμως, αυτή απόδοση τιμής υπάρχει και μια μορφή μνήμης, αυτή τη φορά περισσότερο προσωπική. Τα σταθερά και μόνιμα χαραγμένα ονόματα στα μάρμαρα και τις πέτρες αντιστοιχούν σε πρόσωπα συγγένειας, άμεσης οικειότητας, ακόμα και καθημερινής συναναστροφής ή απλής συντροφικότητας. Εδώ, στη «σκληρή» και «άκαμπτη» ύλη αντιπαραβάλλεται μια πιο εφήμερη, εύπλαστη και μαλακή, το κερί. Χρησιμοποιημένα κεριά από κοντινούς ναούς, άλλοτε αφιερωμένα στη μνήμη οικείων ανθρώπων που χάθηκαν, υπομνήσεις κάθε είδους ευχών, απλώνονται στο έδαφος, σαν μια «σκιά» της μαρμάρινης στήλης, όπως αυτή έπεφτε την ώρα της εκτέλεσης.
